Dear Friend of Press Freedom:

No one else does the essential reporting work that the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker does every day, and we can’t do it without your support.

Today, the Tracker released our annual report highlighting threats to newsgathering across the United States, like the one dozen journalists arrested, detained or who faced charges in 2023. We’ve also documented more than 40 journalists assaulted this year. Our nonpartisan database reports on every search and seizure of news equipment, like the illegal police raid on the Marion County Record newsroom, and the more than 30 costly subpoenas and legal orders served to reporters and news organizations, endangering their protected sources.

At least 12 journalists were arrested or charged in 2023. Pictured, clockwise from bottom left: Alisa Reznick/KJZZ (Unicorn Riot), Eric Marks/Freelance (AllThingsReno.Net/Michelle Renée Dumont), Evan Lambert/NewsNation (NewsNation), Stephanie Keith/Freelance (Reuters/Andrew Kelly), Sherry Digmon and Don Fletcher/Atmore News (Escambia County Sheriff’s Office)
There’s only one way I have those important facts and figures at my fingertips, and it’s the same way you do — our extensive Tracker database keeps us all informed on the state of press freedom in the United States.

To document these threats is to protect newsgathering. Will you support our ability to report on press freedom violations?

SUSTAIN THE TRACKER TODAY

Our reporting and news database is relied upon by advocacy groups, legal scholars, and journalists. It’s just as we intended when we launched the project in 2017, and its future is essential to helping protect press freedom as a cornerstone of our democracy.

Will you donate to Freedom of the Press Foundation to sustain the Press Freedom Tracker database?
