USA for UNFPA recently featured the Institute for Family Health (IFH) as our honored 2024 Implementing Partner.

The award was accepted by Esraa Shakboua, who is a specialist on violence against women and girls and has spent more than 14 years reaching survivors of violence with critical support. Esraa and her colleagues provide comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care across Jordan, including to the country’s 4.2 million refugees.

Our team visited IFH’s clinic in Amman, Jordan earlier this year. The clinic provides truly comprehensive care. In addition to prenatal care and family planning counseling, they also have eye exams, hearing exams, vaccinations, a playground and childcare for kids while their moms are seeing the doctor, educational sessions for girls about periods, child marriage, and development, violence screenings, counseling sessions, and group therapy for survivors.

In Jordan, it is taboo to speak openly about periods or women/girls' bodies and it's extreme enough that girls often lack the language to ask about what periods are and what to expect and where to get products to care for themselves. This session taught girls language they can use that won't be offensive and that will help them get the care they need. Period products are very expensive and difficult to obtain in Jordan because of the extreme stigma, so many women and girls, including Jordanian nationals, will go to the IFH clinic to get period products.

Your support doesn’t just deliver lifesaving resources like Dignity Kits to those who need it most — your support also powers the work of our partners on the ground, like Esraa at IFH, as they reach women and girls surviving the unimaginable.
