Dear John,
Many Americans today worry that our nation is losing its national identity.
Some would define us by our differences: race, religion, gender, ethnicity, beliefs. Some would say the “true” America is the one that is defined most narrowly, that differences must be defended against.
But I would say what truly defines us is the ideals we share, the good we hold in common.
Strengthening our common goals, our common bonds, is our highest calling. It’s the way to find ourselves in the true America, one that celebrates our shared commitments.
Let’s work together with renewed dedication to find our common good. Click here to learn more about how we can do that. Then I hope you’ll pass the video along to friends, family, and anyone with whom you want to create a shared community.
Remember: America is not made great by whom we exclude but by the ideals we uphold together.
To survive and thrive, we need to commit ourselves to the rule of law. To democracy. To tolerance of differences, equal rights and equal opportunities. To upholding the truth.
We’ve never been a perfect union, but our finest moments have been when we have sought to live up to those shared ideals.
I hope you’ll join me in carrying forward the fight for the common good.
