Mining in Mexico’s natural protected areas has devastated local wildlife and human communities. This year, we put a spotlight on the alarming biodiversity loss caused by mining and the urgent need to protect human rights threatened by the industry. We laid the foundation for a ban on mining in natural protected areas by Mexico's Congress, enacted this year, saving precious lands for future generations.
In addition, we are focused on the sustainability and adequate management of natural protected areas, which face funding challenges due to federal environmental budget cuts. Along with our NOSSA coalition, we identified obstacles hindering revenue generation through entrance fees paid by visitors to these protected areas. Our coalition is recommending a multifaceted approach to advocate for increasing public resources for managing and preserving natural protected areas.
