As the year draws to an end, I want to take a look back at the previous 12 months. It was a year filled with both progress and setbacks for our country -- all underscoring the importance of every one of us getting involved in the coming 2024 elections.
DEMOCRATS PUT PEOPLE OVER POLITICS
- In the wake of more gerrymandered maps and voting restrictions, Democrats reintroduced a voting rights bill to modernize and restore the Voting Rights Act and combat voter suppression.
- This year, there were 38 mass shootings in our country -- the most in over 15 years. I reintroduced my bill that would close the Charleston loophole that allows guns to get into the hands of dangerous people without a background check.
- This year, our country hit 33 consecutive months of job growth -- including nearly 200,000 jobs added last month. The improving economy is a testament to Democrats’ investments in manufacturing, clean energy, and infrastructure, which have created good-paying jobs.
- President Biden has forgiven $132 billion in student loan debt for over 3.6 million Americans since taking office, including another almost $5 billion in debt canceled earlier this month.
THE GOP CREATES CHAOS
- Shortly after taking over the House Majority, Republicans threatened to default on our national debt -- a move that could have triggered a recession.
- They also nearly shut down the government -- twice in one year -- which would have hurt our economy, millions of federal workers, and members of our military.
- They ousted Kevin McCarthy as Speaker and spent weeks picking his replacement, bringing the business of the House to a standstill in the process.
- When Republicans were working on legislation, they tried to enact anti-LGBTQ and anti-choice policies -- not to mention launching a baseless impeachment inquiry of President Biden.
- Donald Trump is the likely GOP presidential nominee for 2024 -- despite four indictments brought against him this year.
When I say the stakes for 2024 are high, I mean it. We can’t afford the return of Trump to the White House, and we can’t afford another two years of the GOP controlling the House agenda.
The next year will determine whether we go backward or forward, John.
The strength of our movement is measured by the participation and generous support of people like you, John, and we have our biggest deadline of the year in less than two weeks. Please contribute any amount you can spare.
