When Antofagasta, a foreign mining conglomerate, set its sights on Ely, Minnesota, to build the state's first sulfide-ore copper mine, we knew we had to do something. Many deemed our dream of achieving a federal ban on copper mining in this watershed impossible. However, Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness, a steadfast advocate for local Wilderness for decades, embraced our cause and dared to dream big. Thus, Save the Boundary Waters was born. Since then, our movement has grown into a nationally recognized force for public lands protection: -
We have built a strong coalition and become the voice of the Boundary Waters in Washington, D.C., St. Paul, and beyond. In fact, we are the only organization working at both the federal and state levels to permanently safeguard this cherished Wilderness.
- Through tenacious persistence, we have attended over 1,000 meetings in Washington, D.C., across three different federal administrations.
-
This year, we celebrated the recent 20-year ban on copper mining in a portion of Superior National Forest.
However, we know the Boundary Waters is a forever Wilderness that demands continuous protection. We still have work to do. |
