Tonight's County Meeting Cancelled; March 28 County Convention Goes Online
Our monthly meeting this evening has been cancelled due to the ongoing public health crisis. We are researching options to hold future meetings online.
Also, our county convention on March 28th will be held online. The North Carolina Democratic Party has directed that we hold a Virtual Convention. What this will mean is that you will participate online, using a computer or other internet device, or that you will participate by phone. To get access to the convention you need to sign up in advance online. We expect to send information about registering for the Virtual Convention by email on March 20th. If a Democrat you know does not have access to the internet to register for the Virtual Convention, our March 20th email will include a phone number so that an NHCDP volunteer can register them and provide call-in information. We ask all precinct chairs to determine whether a convention delegate from their precinct needs this assistance.
In addition, you can sign up right now to be a delegate at the District and State Conventions. Just click here, You do not need to be a delegate to the County Convention or to attend the County Convention to sign up for the District or State Convention. We do not yet know whether the District and State conventions will be online or in-person.
Dems Field Diverse Slate for Statewide Offices in North Carolina
(From NCDEMS) After the results of the primary contests, North Carolina Democrats are proud to celebrate one of the most diverse Council of State slates in recent history. Democrats have nominated five women for roles on the Council of State:
Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor Rep. Yvonne Holley (photo at left)
Secretary of State Elaine Marshall
State Auditor Beth Wood
Democratic nominee for Commissioner of Agriculture Jenna Wadsworth
Democratic nominee for Superintendent of Public Instruction Jen Mangrum
Democratic nominee for Labor Commissioner Jessica Holmes.
In addition to strong representation for women candidates, voters have also nominated two people of color, Democratic nominee for Treasurer Ronnie Chatterji, Rep. Yvonne Holley and Jessica Holmes, and one nominee who identifies with the LGBTQ+ community, Jenna Wadsworth. In contrast, Republicans have chosen a slate consisting of 80% white men, with only one person of color and one woman nominee.
State Senator Terry Van Duyne, who finished second in the Democratic primary for Lieutenant Governor, cleared the way for Holley to run for the office by declining to seek a run-off election. Holley, who is African American, will face off against extreme conservative Republican Mark Robinson, who is also African American. Robinson has said is that he has a "god-given, inalienable right" to carry guns to protect himself. He has equated abortion with slavery and opposes "demonizing law enforcement."
Governor Cooper Declares State of Emergency to Deal with Covid-19 Virus
(From Governor's press release) Governor Roy Cooper followed the state’s coronavirus COVID-19 preparedness plan last Tuesday and issued an executive order declaring a state of emergency, days before President Trump made a similar declaration at the national level. The North Carolina declaration activates the Emergency Operations Center to help agencies coordinate from one location and makes it easier to purchase needed medical supplies, protect consumers from price gouging, and increase county health departments’ access to state funds. Click the image to the left for a continuously updated map of the worldwide spread of COVID-19.
In addition to Governor Cooper’s emergency declaration, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) is making several recommendations to slow the spread of COVID-19 and reduce the number of people infected. For tips and information on the health emergency, visit the NCDHHS site here. You can also get information at the governor's Hot Line at 866-462-3821.
