Hi, The number of people killed through Israeli attacks in Gaza has reached 18,787, with 50,897 wounded, and many more likely still buried under rubble.1 The vast majority are civilians, most of whom are women and children.2 The rate of children dying far surpasses all other current global conflicts combined, and outpaces all other 21st century wars.2 As UN General Secretary António Guterres said last week, “The people of Gaza are looking into the abyss.”3 This mass killing will not increase the safety or security of Israelis or Palestinians. Only a cessation of hostilities and a political solution can protect the lives of all civilians. We must intensify our calls for an immediate, permanent ceasefire. Sign the petition: To protect the lives of all civilians, we need a permanent ceasefire NOW. UN head Guterres observed that Gaza is becoming a "graveyard for children" and that the civilian death toll in Gaza is “unparalleled and unprecedented” since he began leading the UN in 2017.4 Hamas's attacks beginning on October 7 must be condemned, but Israel's response has been disproportionate and taken an extraordinary civilian toll. Nearly 2 million Palestinians have been displaced since the bombing began in October. The health care system has entirely collapsed, and the entire population is facing the risk of starvation. The refugee crisis threatens to destabilize the broader region.5 A permanent ceasefire and a negotiated, political solution is the only way to stop the mass civilian death and displacement. Add your name: Congress must call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza! Thanks for taking action, Sources:
