In 2023, we saw incredible victories across the labor movement. From the UAW strike that ended in huge gains for autoworkers to the writers and actors who successfully took on Hollywood, suddenly working people are winning everywhere you look.
AFSCME members have been a huge part of the labor movement’s victories this year. When I went to visit UAW members on the picket line, there was a wall of green there to show support and solidarity. Wherever the fight is, AFSCME is there.
AFSCME members have also won great contracts this year, with pay raises, great benefits and strong protections. And we took on the staffing crisis. Our Staff the Front Lines bus tour visited 19 cities and held job fairs that attracted thousands of people looking for good-paying careers in public service.
But we’re facing challenges as well. There are still anti-worker politicians who want to crush our rights and freedoms. In Florida, for example, a hostile legislature and governor are trying to dismantle the power AFSCME workers have built over decades.
That’s why it’s critical in this pivotal election year, that we support candidates who respect us and will stand up for our freedom to organize for a better life.
Every year, I am so proud to be a part of this incredible organization of 1.4 million people who are dedicated to making our communities stronger, healthier, and safer. Thank you for everything you do every day. Have a safe and happy holiday season.
In solidarity,
Lee Saunders, AFSCME
