Harnessing Innovative Tools of Accountability in Pursuit of International Justice

On December 7, 2023, WIIS and the Embassy of Liechtenstein held a hybrid discussion with opening remarks by Ariela Blätter (President and CEO, WIIS) and H.E. Ambassador Georg Sparber (Ambassador of Liechtenstein to the U.S.). The panel discussion featured Jennifer Glaudemans (Senior Advisor, Office of Global Criminal Justice at the U.S. Department of State), Wai Wai Nu (Founder and Executive Director, Women’s Peace Network) and Andrea Gittleman (Policy Director, Simon Skjodt Center for the Prevention of Genocide). The panel was moderated by Dr. Karin Johnston (Research Director, WIIS).

WIIS Germany Celebrates 20 Years
Security Strategies & Cooperations for the Next Two Decades

On November 16, 2023, WIIS.de (WIIS Germany), commemorated its 20-year anniversary in a celebratory event: Security Strategies and Cooperation for the Next Two Decades.

Inspiring Women to Build Careers in Peace and Security

On December 7, 2023, WIIS Horn of Africa, the U.S. Institute of Peace, the Uganda Muslim Youth Development Forum, and Sisters Without Borders hosted a symposium on women's leadership and participation in peace and security.

The Moving Image: Addressing Violence, Reframing Peace

On December 3, 2023, WISCOMP (WIIS India) hosted an event focused on how films and other forms of imagery are used to incite hate, while simultaneously being used to advance peace. The event featured Sarah Jacob (Journalist & Formerly Senior Editor, NDTV), Sania Farooqui (Journalist & Field Producer, CNN), Dr. Jackson Katz (Film Maker, Educator & Author), Satish Kumar Singh (Senior Advisor, Centre for Health & Social Justice), Aaradhana Kohli Kapur (Independent Film Maker & Gender Training Facilitator), Pamela Philipose (Journalist& Senior Fellow, Indian Council of Social Science Research), Soumya Mathew (Assistant Manager for Digital Engagement, Breakthrough-India), Krutika Kapil (Senior Coordinator, Breakthrough-India), Rubi (Member, Managing Committee, Feminist Approach to Technology), and Dr. Sunetra Sen Narayan (Professor, Indian Institute of Mass Communication).

On November 28, 2023, WIIS Australia hosted a book talk with Dr. Sarah Percy (Associate Professor, University of Queensland) on her new book Forgotten Warriors: The History of Women on the Front Line.

Strengthening Gender Equality by Understanding the Role of Masculinities in Security

On December 7, 2023, WIIS Brussels held an event focused on the different types of masculinities and their relevance to international security policy and practice. The event featured a discussion from Oleksandra Garshyan (Project Officer, WIN for Women and Men, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe), Tomas Henning (Policy Officer Partnerships, Civilian Planning, and Conduct Capability at European External Action Service), Erik Melander (Uppsala University), and Jonna Naumanen (Senior Expert on Gender and WPS & Advisor to the EU Ambassador for Gender and Diversity, European External Action Service).

Gendered Implementation of the Global Fragility Act: A Case for Haiti

Haiti is one of the priority partner countries the U.S. government has identified under the U.S. Strategy to Prevent Conflict and Promote Stability to help redefine how the United States can assist in preventing violence and advance stability in areas vulnerable to conflict. Marvin Dee Mathelier (Major and Civil Affairs Officer, United States Marine Corps Reserves) and Tahina Montoya (Political/Military Analyst, U.S. Air Force Reserve and Defense Fellow, WIIS) argue that Haiti’s implementation plan must integrate a gender perspective and knowledge of Haiti’s complex history and how it has contributed to the gendered dimensions of Haiti’s current violence.

Decrypting Diversity in Australia’s Intelligence Community

WIIS Australia Steering Committee member Elise Stephenson (Director, Australian National University’s (ANU) Global Insitute for Women’s Leadership) and Matilda Merry (Undergraduate Student, ANU) investigate the inclusiveness of Australia’s intelligence community and its efforts to become truly reflective of Australian demographics. They argue that diversity and recruitment are areas where Australia’s intelligence communities can and should have greater openness.

WISCOMP Celebrates 25th Year Anniversary

In July 2024 WISCOMP (WIIS India) will celebrate 25 years of action and commitment towards nurturing constituencies of peace and promoting cultures of pluralism and coexistence in South Asia. Originally established as an initiative of the Foundation for Universal Responsibility of His Holiness The Dalai Lama, for the past two decades WISCOMP has grown into an integral agency of support and promotion of women leadership.

Women Leaders: Africa All Around

In WIIS Brussels’ November podcast, Ilana Bet-El (Advisory Board Member, WIIS Brussels) hosts Comfort Ero (President & CEO, International Crisis Group) and Nina Wilén (Director of the Africa Program, Egmont, Royal Institute for International Relations) for a lively conversation focusing on Africa. They discuss the problems of governing and governance within the continent, the reasons why citizens of African states have both embraced and rejected constitutional and military coups, the role and potential of the African Union with a seat at the G20, and the position of Russia in Africa.

Saahas Awards: Celebrating Women’s Role in Nurturing Peace in South Asia

WISCOMP is now accepting applications and nominations for the Saahas Awards. This award celebrates the innovative initiatives of people and organizations working to strengthen women’s role in peace building in South Asia. Individuals who have been working with women in protracted conflicts in South Asia are invited to submit stories of how they spoke out, stepped forward, and took action. Women who are ‘change agents’ in areas that have witnessed protracted conflict, are especially encouraged to apply. Applications will be accepted until December 30, 2023.

The Catherine M. Kelleher Fellowship for International Security Studies

The Catherine M. Kelleher Fellowship for International Security Studies supports an exceptional graduate student pursuing their master’s or doctoral degree at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy. Professor Kelleher founded WIIS in 1987 and is also a founding faculty member of the University of Maryland School of Public Policy, where she also founded the Center for International and Security Studies at Maryland (CISSM). Throughout her policy and academic careers, Professor Kelleher was a champion for women in the field of international security policy. This fellowship is intended to ensure that future generations benefit from the kind of support that she gave to countless people in the field today. Catherine M. Kelleher passed away on February 15, 2023.
