Chris Janaro will join City Limits in January through the Newmark Veterans in Journalism Fellowship Program—a partnership between Military Veterans in Journalism (MVJ), the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN), and the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY—which places fellows in nonprofit newsrooms for nine months as they start their journalism careers. Janaro is a recent CUNY Newmark graduate and a Navy vet. He’ll cover land use, zoning and development, and will work on stories exploring how housing and homelessness policies impact New York’s veteran communities.
NYCHA reporter Tatyana Turner recently appeared on WNYC’s Notes from America on Dec. 17 to discuss her public housing coverage.
Climate reporter Mariana Simões will be a guest on WNYC’s The Brian Lehrer show on Tuesday, Dec. 19 to discuss her investigation into the lawsuit challenging New York’s gas ban.

CLARIFY News high school student reporters are wrapping up their Fall assignment, an investigation of Mayor Eric Adams’ progress on housing and homelessness. Working in teams, student reporters are focused on comparing progress against three pillars of his housing campaign promises: “Save NYCHA,” “Create and Preserve Affordable Housing,” and “Reimagine Our City.” In addition to receiving training in the fundamentals of investigative reporting, this CLARIFY News cohort had an opportunity to interview and learn from visiting speakers including Councilwoman Alexa Aviles; photojournalist Adi Talmar; CSS Housing Policy Analyst, Samuel Stein; Executive Director at Citizens Housing and Planning Council, Howard Slatkin; City Limits NYCHA reporter, Tatyana Turner; and City Limits editor, Jeanmarie Evelly. Look out for their article to be published early in the new year.
We are planning for a robust year of journalism in 2024, made possible by the generous support of funders including The Pinkerton Foundation who recently announced a renewed partnership with us that we are so grateful for. Plans for 2024 include more than doubling the number of student reporters participating in the CLARIFY News six-week summer intensive, in partnership with SYEP and the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY.

This program matches individual support with talented high school students to provide them with skills and experience that will support their successful entry into higher education or the workforce.
