"Without Indigenous peoples, there are no solutions to the climate crisis!"
– Sonia Guajajara at COP28

Amazon Watch and Indigenous partners are coming back from COP28, the UN’s climate change conference, with key lessons for the path ahead to protect the Amazon. The final COP28 agreement failed to include a “phase out” of fossil fuels, making our work to recognize Indigenous land rights in the Amazon that much more important.

Will you donate today to support our campaigns to advance Indigenous land rights and keep oil in the ground in the Amazon? Your gift will be MATCHED through December 31!

FOR THE HEART PUMP OF OUR PLANET, MATCH MY GIFT!

All gifts up to $200,000 will be matched by generous donors, to support Indigenous rights and solutions for the rainforest.

This year, we saw how Indigenous solutions can overcome even the major drivers of rainforest destruction. After more than a decade of campaigning, Ecuadorians voted to halt a major oil drilling project in Yasuní National Park, ancestral territory of Waorani, Tagaeri, Taromenane, and Dugakaeri peoples. Amazon Watch is proud to have played our part in this victory, with your support!

The vote to halt oil drilling and protect this mega-biodiverse rainforest region sets a powerful precedent for how countries and communities can protect the Amazon.

What does your gift support on this path forward? We are working directly with Indigenous partners to:

  • Secure Indigenous rights to steward and defend their ancestral territories
  • End Amazon oil extraction by pressuring investors, policymakers, and end markets like California from investing in Amazon destruction
  • Support Earth Defenders seeking legal justice for destruction and violence in their communities
  • Advance the Indigenous-led movement to permanently protect 80% of the rainforest by 2025.

This is the path forward to End Amazon Crude – an Indigenous-led path to protect the rainforest and our climate. We all have a role to play. Please consider making a donation today, which will be doubled, for the heart pump of our planet!

For the Amazon,

Leila Salazar-López
