Dear friend,
In April of this year, heavy armed fighting broke out in Khartoum, Sudan. Health facilities were forced to close due to severe damage to hospitals and violence that endangered healthcare workers. Many hospitals were forced to close completely, including Bashair Teaching Hospital.
But then, an incredible thing happened: Doctors and nurses, along with young people from the community, decided to reopen Bashair Teaching Hospital and treat patients, despite the risks.
I was one of the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) doctors to work in Sudan early on in the project, and I continued to provide guidance to the hospital team on restoring lifesaving surgical care to people in the region.
This is the essence of MSF’s work: We go where other organizations can’t or won't go to fill gaps in health care. And we always put delivering compassionate medical care to our patients first.
Please support the lifesaving work of MSF teams in Sudan, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Haiti, and beyond. When you give today, your gift will go TWICE as far thanks to a $1 million matching gift from a generous group of MSF donors.

When MSF teams first arrived at Bashair Teaching Hospital, the situation was chaotic. The hospital was not operational. A few doctors and volunteers were doing their best to attend to the heavy flow of patients, but it was a challenge. Supplies, including electricity, were running dangerously low.
Our surgical team saw multiple patients with gunshot and stab wounds. We saw patients with injuries in their chest, abdomen, liver, and kidney. We performed vascular reconstructive surgery, without which the patient would have lost a limb or even died.
It is not an exaggeration to say that MSF is a lifeline to people in Sudan and in more than 70 countries across the world. That’s why this work is so important to me, and why I’m asking you to support teams like mine and those in MSF projects around the world.

When you donate to MSF, you could be funding the surgical tools that doctors like me use to save lives, the gauze we dress wounds in, and the vital medical supplies we need to keep our hospitals stocked. With 83 percent of every dollar going directly to humanitarian aid, you can rest assured that donating to MSF is one of the most impactful ways you can help patients in need of medical care around the globe.
Once again, thank you so much for being a part of the MSF movement.
Sincerely,
Dr. Shazeer Majeed
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)
A note on MSF’s operations in Khartoum: Recently, our teams have been forced to suspend life-saving surgical activities at Bashair Teaching Hospital in southern Khartoum, Sudan, including trauma surgery and Cesarean sections, after a blockade on surgical supplies was enacted. MSF is ready to resume its surgical activities when supply lines are restored.
P.S. If your year-end gift and our email have crossed paths, we sincerely thank you for your generosity!
