Panthers in Florida are in crisis. Thirteen have died this year because of vehicle collisions, and future urban sprawl will make the situation worse.
So the Center for Biological Diversity took legal action to stop developments that would push panthers closer to the edge of extinction.

Florida claims the panther as its state animal. Yet officials are poised to sell out this species by approving massive developments that would destroy more than 5,000 acres of prime panther habitat.
It would also increase the amount of vehicle traffic — the leading cause of panther deaths — throughout the area.
Last month four panthers were killed in a single week, all by vehicle collisions.
Decades of urban sprawl have forced these wide-ranging animals to eke out a living in less than 5% of their historic range. Today there may be as few as 120 left.
That's why we're stepping up our fight to save them.
It's clear what panthers need to survive and fully recover: ample space to follow their natural instincts to roam.
By keeping roads and cars from slashing through their habitat — and securing the few remaining areas where they can still hunt and find mates — we can pull these great cats back from the brink.
Panthers can live longer than 10 years in the wild, but nearly half of those killed this year were less than a year old — still only kittens.
Their future is far from guaranteed. Officials in Florida must take responsibility for threatened wildlife. We're doing all we can to protect panthers and other precious species.
