Dear John,

I was getting caught up on The New York Times ’ podcast series “The Daily” this weekend and heard the interview with Kate Cox, the pregnant Texas woman who’s at the center of the fight for abortion rights right now .

“I’m hopeful that the state will be sympathetic. I love and I want this baby so badly. There’s nobody that loves and wants a baby girl more than I do… But there’s no outcome at the end of this, where I take home a healthy baby girl. And I want to do what’s best for my health.” - Kate Cox on “The Daily”

As you probably know, soon after she told a reporter this, the Texas Supreme Court actually ruled against her and denied her an abortion —even though her baby had been diagnosed with a fatal disease, and her doctor had determined that if Kate carried the pregnancy to term, it could endanger her health and her future fertility.

John, if there ever was a moment in this battle that clearly painted a picture of what’s at stake in the 2024 elections for all of us, the real-world consequences of anti-abortion legislators in power, AND the need for a long-term strategy, this is it.

And make sure our reproductive freedoms in Minnesota are here to stay.

Women Winning is looking at the long game. We’re not only electing pro choice women into office at all levels, we’re building a powerhouse of viable candidates and fierce political strategists equipped with the skills, financial support and resources, network, and know-how to run strong races—and equally important—outsmart anti-abortion opponents once in office.

Kate Cox’s story is not isolated. Unfortunately, these injustices are happening across the country. Anti-abortion lawmakers are showing just how far they’ll go to ban abortion. As a woman, it breaks my heart (yet again) to witness such contempt for women’s autonomy. As a mother, I’m concerned about the future. As a changemaker, I am ready for this next battle. From Greater Minnesota to the Twin Cities, Women Winning is ready to lead—laying the building blocks for a deep-seated bench of pro choice political power to win, lead and legislate in 2024 and beyond.
