CWA President, Secretary-Treasurer, and call center workers arrested outside of HHS headquarters

Call center workers at Maximus, the federal government’s largest call center contractor, rallied and protested outside of the Department of Health and Human Services headquarters in Washington, DC last week.

Claude Cummings Jr., President of Communications Workers of America (CWA) and Ameenah Salaam, Secretary-Treasurer of CWA were arrested alongside labor advocates and workers during an action outside the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services last week.
Workers demanded that HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra and the Biden Administration require livable wages of $25 per hour on federal call center contracts, ensure workers have access to affordable health care, and to investigate Maximus’s low road employment practices. Representatives Bennie Thompson, Ro Khanna, Cori Bush and Greg Casar as well as SEIU President Mary Kay Henry joined workers in calling on the Biden Administration to back up its commitment to "good jobs" with concrete action. Tentative agreement on new contract reached between ATU Local 689 and National Express Transit
|
ATU Local 689 reached a tentative agreement on a new contract with National Express Transit late yesterday afternoon. National Express is currently contracted by WMATA to provide MetroAccess services. Currently, the contract covers 263 employees in Maryland and Virginia.Through the bargaining process that began in early October of this year, Local 689 successfully negotiated improvements to the current contract which will better benefit its members, and improve their livelihood.

AFL-CIO and Microsoft announce new tech-labor partnership on AI and the future of the workforce

The AFL-CIO and Microsoft Corp. recently announced a new partnership to create an open dialogue to discuss how artificial intelligence (AI) must anticipate the needs of workers and include their voices in its development and implementation. This partnership is the first of its kind between a labor organization and a technology company to focus on AI and will deliver on three goals. Read more »

It's the holiday season! Clockwise, from top left: The DC chapter of Pride at Work hosted a holiday party last week and ATU Local 689 and AFGE District 14 to hold a toy drive that served over 350 children. Metro Washington Council, AFL-CIO hosted our Delegates for a holiday party at our offices, and Dyana Forester and Sam Epps joined Jackie Pogue-Lyons for the Washington Teachers' Union holiday party to celebrate DC teachers as they fight for a new contract.
