Year after year, the evidence is clear: strong gun laws save lives.

John—

Today, we launched the 2023 edition of our Annual Gun Law Scorecard, where we grade and rank all 50 states on their gun laws.

We found that the states with strong gun laws—As and Bs—are also the states that tend to have fewer gun deaths. The gun lobby tries to convince people that gun safety laws don’t work, but the data shows otherwise. Gun laws are saving lives right now, across the country.

Check out the 2023 Gun Law Scorecard and see how your state stacks up.

Unfortunately, it works both ways: states that are weakening existing gun laws and blocking new ones—Ds and Fs—have significantly higher gun death rates. This year, 8 of the 10 states with the worst gun death rates received Fs.

By focusing on actions like investing in community violence intervention and enacting waiting period laws, many states were able to improve their grades—Colorado for example rose from a B to an A- after passing a series of gun safety laws. But Florida and Nebraska enacted permitless carry laws, endangering their residents and dropping their grades.

We know how to put an end to this crisis. We just need leaders who will embrace these lifesaving solutions.

Gratefully,
Allison
