They did it again.

After the last census, Georgia lawmakers designed state legislative and congressional maps that blatantly diluted the voting power of Black voters, in violation of the Voting Rights Act.

In October, a federal judge struck down those maps.

But instead of following the judge’s order to remedy the violation and deliver fair maps, the state legislature convened for a special session where they once again prioritized partisan power-clinging over accurately representing the diversity of Georgia voters in the General Assembly.

This isn’t over: As anti-voter lawmakers continue pushing their extreme agenda, we’ll keep fighting back even harder so voters can make their voices heard. But this work is only possible because of this team.

Together with partners in the Peach State, Fair Fight Action monitored the special session — calling on legislators to conduct the work in public, end gerrymandering that disadvantages Black voters, and allow Georgians time to review and provide input on the maps.

Now that the session is over, the Georgia Legislature appears to be heading down the same path as Alabama: vacating their responsibility to draw fair maps and instead risking the responsibility being handed to a court appointee.

Over the course of this special session, anti-voter lawmakers reiterated their core goal: maintaining partisan power by any means necessary.

Let’s be clear: Partisan gerrymandering and racial gerrymandering are cousins in the ongoing effort to undermine democracy and the will of voters. The people should pick their representatives. Politicians should not pick their voters.
