John,
Believe it or not, on this day in 1952, Governor Talmadge of Georgia proposed the unthinkable - abolishing public schools to evade integration. He was willing to obliterate the entire education system rather than allow Black folks in the building. They'd rather scrap the whole system than share it with everyone.
It's a shocking glimpse into what white supremacists long for.
Fast forward to today, and the attack on public education isn't a thing of the past.
We are actually still in the middle of wrestling with this very issue. Mike Pence (
that former Vice President) announced not too long ago that he thinks it's time we "shut down the Federal Department of Education." (Seriously, what's he even talking about?)
To add to the madness, Vivek Ramaswamy, a presidential candidate, is pointing fingers at the Department of Education as the root of the problem.
What is troubling is the privilege of making these statements seemingly without regard for the impact on the 7.4 million Black students attending public school.
While these folks genuinely believe in this dangerous ideology, they're actively trying to take knowledge out of the hands of millions of Black people.
Write a letter to your representative on why public schools matter and demand they commit to protecting public schools.
These moves show a troubling pattern, and we've got to pay attention. Public education has always been our way to learn, grow, and aim for a better future. But across the country, districts with the most Black students receive way less funding on a state and local side.
It's like they're looking the other way instead of tackling the real issues our kids and teachers deal with every single day.
Messing with education means messing with the dreams and opportunities of so many Black students.
If we don't fight for the integrity of our public education system, we risk jeopardizing the very foundation upon which countless young lives build their dreams.
It's time to take action by voicing our concerns and advocating for what truly matters. Write a letter to your local representative emphasizing the crucial role of public schools and urging them to pledge their commitment to safeguarding the integrity of our public education system.
This attack is a clear indication that our progress, our achievements, and our resilience are making an impact. It's almost as if wherever we shine, they become rattled and apprehensive. But let's make it clear: Their attempts won't deter us. We'll continue the fight for our education and everything else until we've eradicated the white supremacist that exists within.
In love and solidarity,
Black Lives Matter
