BIG NEWS: For 4 years, Empathy Network Leader Tonie Wilis together with
Dream.Org have been working to pass the Dignity for Incarcerated Women
(DIW) bill in PA. This month, it was finally passed by the PA Senate and
is now waiting for Gov. Shapiro to sign it into law. DIW will ensure that
incarcerated pregnant women and their babies will be treated humanely.
Read below to learn about 2024’s impactful state campaigns coming soon.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

John,

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the 2024 state campaigns and Day
of Empathy events. This year, we are expanding our legislative campaign
efforts, returning to seven states we partnered with last year, and adding
two new ones, Tennessee and South Carolina, to the fold.

Our Empathy Network leaders had incredible successes this year as
legislation passed in six of the nine states. Here is a list of the
legislation wins our Empathy Network Leaders achieved in 2023:

* [ [link removed] ]Mississippi: Financial Fairness for Families
* [ [link removed] ]Kentucky: Fentanyl testing strips
* [ [link removed] ]Washington: Juvenile Sentencing Reform
* [ [link removed] ]Arkansas: Fines and Fees Reform
* [ [link removed] ]Oregon: Dignity for Incarcerated Women
* [ [link removed] ]Pennsylvania: The Dignity for Incarcerated Women

In this upcoming session, our Empathy Network leaders will advance a wide
variety of new legislative initiatives:

* Arkansas (AR): Release of the Elderly Incarcerated Population
* Arizona (AZ): Home Arrest with Electronic Monitoring and Independent
Oversight of the Arizona Prison System
* Kentucky (KY): Clean Slate, IDs Upon Reentry, and Persistent Felony
Offender Reform
* Missouri (MO): Confidential Informant Reform
* Mississippi (MS): Expungement law reform
* South Carolina (SC): Bridging South Carolina Communities with
Resiliency
* Tennessee (TN): Victim's Compensation for Juvenile Offenders
* Washington (WA): Retroactivity for Juvenile Offenders and Emerging
Adults Reform
* Wisconsin (WI): Supervision Reform

In addition to our state campaigns, Dream.Org will hold Day of Empathy
events around the country in January, February, and March. Day of Empathy
is the nation's largest action day for criminal justice reform. It unites
people from all backgrounds affected by America’s criminal legal system,
highlighting the need for systemic reforms.

Here are the dates for the Day of Empathy Events in the campaign states:

* Arkansas: February 26, 2024
* Arizona: February 6, 2024
* Kentucky: March 5, 2024
* Missouri: March 6, 2024
* Mississippi: March 5, 2024
* South Carolina: March 20, 2024
* Tennessee: March 13, 2024
* Washington: January 24, 2024
* Wisconsin: March 7, 2024

Stay tuned for updates and actionable steps here on how you can
participate in our campaign and the Day of Empathy events in your state.
You can find the events on our [ [link removed] ]Mobilize page. Your involvement drives
change and shapes a future free from mass incarceration.

One action you can take right now is to [ [link removed] ]sign the C.J. Rice petition and
demand Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner release him now. Rice
is a falsely convicted man who has been held in prison for more than a
decade. Learn more about [ [link removed] ]C.J.’s story here.
