Dear John,
Last week, we joined Uber and Lyft drivers with Chicago Gig Alliance (CGA) at one of Uber’s Chicago hubs to unveil a “Naughty or Nice” list, put coal in Uber’s stocking, and demand fair pay, safety on the job, and an end to unfair deactivations.

After singing some cheeky carols together, Uber drivers and CGA members shared stories of feeling unsafe on the job, trying to make ends meet, and being unfairly deactivated without any notice or chance to appeal. They called on Chicago’s City Council to pass the Rideshare Living Wage and Safety Ordinance, which would create higher safety standards, protections against unfair firings, and better pay. The drivers were joined and supported by Alderman Lamont Robinson and the siblings of Mohammed al Hejoj, a Chicago Uber driver who was shot and killed by a passenger earlier this month.

Rideshare drivers for corporations like Lyft and Uber have been organizing and raising the alarm about low pay, unfair deactivations, and dangerous working conditions for years. We’ve been connecting together driver groups from across the country so that they can take on Uber’s growing health and safety crisis. In a report published with ACRE and Gig Workers Rising, we found that more than 80 drivers have been murdered behind the wheel in the past five years. Uber and Lyft have tried to downplay the dangerous working conditions they push drivers into, all the while celebrating record profits. So, last May, more than 1,000 drivers across the country united in a coordinated day of action to demand that these companies prioritize worker safety. A week later, CGA member Jocilyn Floyd attended Uber’s annual shareholder meeting and she presented the first ever resolution calling on Uber to pay drivers fairly and end unfair terminations. Shortly after, CGA introduced their Rideshare Living Wage and Safety Ordinance.

As Uber rolls out holiday-themed gimmicks, like reindeer-shaped delivery robots and party buses, rideshare drivers are calling out the corporation’s refusal to address their needs for safety, fair pay, and an end to unfair deactivations.
It’s been a busy year for rideshare drivers organizing across the country, and they’re going to keep putting the pressure on these app corporations until they win! As the rideshare drivers in Chicago put it last week: 🎶 We’re winning the fight For fair workers' rights Driving people through Chicagoland! 🎶 |
