In recent years, the legislative landscape for LGBTQ+ rights, particularly those of transgender people, has been met with challenges unparalleled in modern history. With the 2023 legislative session marking one of the most daunting periods for transgender rights, the need for effective strategies and relentless advocacy has never been more pressing.

To date, we have supported our state partners to help enact 110 pro-LGBTQ+ bills and defeat 85% of the 420 anti-transgender bills introduced in state legislatures.

* Our Emergent Needs Fund moved $75,000 to state partners to fight harmful legislation in 2023, whether they needed to hire a lobbyist, transport trans kids and their families to the capitol to testify, or mobilize turnout to a key hearing.
* Our Paid Call Fund dedicated nearly $100,000 to help our state partner organizations directly connect constituents to key legislators when bills faced an urgent decision point in 2023.
* Our Wellness and Healing Justice Fund was a $25,000 fund set aside for state partners to offer wellness programming and self-care opportunities for their staff and supporters as they face trauma from directly interfacing with often hostile state legislatures. This fund has already been doubled for 2024.

Throughout this tumultuous year, Equality Federation has supported our state partners with everything from grassroots support to bill tracking to messaging and beyond. In 2024, Equality Federation and our state and national partners will continue to work together to protect LGBTQ+ people in all the communities we call home.
