Dearjohn ,

I hope that you and your family are well. The House of Representatives wrapped up its legislative business for 2023 this past week. I’m looking forward to spending Christmas in North Carolina and having the opportunity see many of you at our district’s Christmas celebrations.

Making the Impeachment Inquiry Official

This week, my colleagues and I voted to formalize the House’s impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.

The facts don’t lie – the Judiciary, Oversight, and Ways and Means committees have already uncovered substantial evidence that Joe Biden was involved in Hunter Biden’s corrupt foreign dealings, and we must leave no stone unturned.

I believe it’s important that this impeachment inquiry proceeds, as we must answer key questions once and for all: did Joe Biden take any official actions related to money or bribes provided to him and his family? Did Joe Biden abuse his office by providing access and/or favors to foreign interests in exchange for payments to the Biden family? Did Joe Biden obstruct investigations into his son, Hunter?

We will follow the facts wherever they lead. I look forward to working with my colleagues on the Judiciary Committee to continue our investigation into any and all potential Biden family corruption.

As part of the ongoing investigations into the Biden family’s foreign business dealings, Hunter Biden was scheduled to appear for a deposition on Wednesday. Instead, Hunter decided to hold a press conference on the Senate side of the Capitol with radical left democrats while denying any wrongdoing. The House will consider initiating contempt of Congress proceedings in response to this brazen refusal to appear – it isn’t excusable just because your last name is “Biden.”

This impeachment inquiry will be a major priority for me in the new year. I will keep you posted as we learn more and as the House prepares to take additional actions.

The Week in Weaponized Government

In a major disappointment for liberty-loving Americans, Swamp forces on both the left and right united this week to force through an extension of one the Intelligence Community’s most abused surveillance programs as part of annual defense authorization bill that contains bloated spending, harmful policies, and zero reforms to protect Americans from warrantless spying.

Presidents of both parties have abused the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) to spy on American citizens without a warrant and without their knowledge, all in the name of national security.

This is unconscionable. My colleagues and I on the Judiciary Committee marked up a strong reform bill that will require the government to get a warrant before viewing and searching Americans’ data and communications. The 4th Amendment is clear, and it must be honored.

In the New Year, I’ll be fighting tooth and nail to ensure that this reform bill becomes the law of the land. We cannot continue allowing the deep state to run roughshod over the American people’s civil liberties. These warrantless spying programs must come to an end.

Confronting the Censorship Industrial Complex Head On

This past week, as Chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee for the Committee on Homeland Security, I led a critical hearing examining the Censorship Laundering Schemes from the Department of Homeland Security, specifically from CISA.  Watch my full opening statement, laying out the dangers we face:

This shouldn’t be a partisan issue. When the government censors Americans, it’s wrong, even if these deep state bureaucrats mask their obscene and illegal activities by laundering the censorship through private sector proxies.

The government cannot simply sidestep the Constitution by outsourcing censorship under the guise of protecting “critical cognitive infrastructure.”

This hearing was the first Congressional hearing to feature government witness testifying about these damaging schemes, and believe me, these bureaucrats bristled at the idea that they should have to answer any questions.

While I’m heartened by the progress attained in Missouri v. Biden and other court cases affirming free speech, we cannot afford to wait for a court decision to stop DHS and CISA’s efforts to manipulate the national conversation.

Congress has a duty to rein in out-of-control agencies and protect the American people’s civil liberties. To that end, this Subcommittee will be drafting legislation that prevents DHS and CISA from working with social media platforms to suppress or otherwise act as switchboard operators for Americans’ speech.
