White House Leans Into Trump-Era Immigration Policy Changes to Get Ukraine Aid [[link removed]]
The Biden administration signaled that it is willing to make disastrous—and permanent—changes to asylum and immigration policy to obtain temporary military aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.

Families are complicated. Especially during the holidays, that’s something we can all agree on. But most of us can’t – or will never have to – imagine being forcibly separated from our closest relatives because an overworked immigration judge (IJ) misapplied a legal standard in deciding whether someone is entitled to stay in the United States.
FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW
The Senate has yet to reach a deal on the border after recent hours-long meetings with Senate negotiators, staff from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and top Biden officials.
Even if the negotiators strike a deal, it's unlikely that a vote could happen in the next week, likely pushing any possible outcome until after Congress’ recess ends in January.
The proposed deal reportedly includes a laundry list of measures that would be disastrous for the country's humanitarian protection system, including nationwide expedited removal, mass detention, and some form of asylum bans, among others.
This report from the American Immigration Council provides better alternatives that keep the U.S. asylum system intact while creating a safe, orderly, and efficient humanitarian protection system at the border and beyond.

ACROSS THE NATION
The American Immigration Council had a high-impact year in 2023, from being at the forefront of challenging harmful legislation and policies in the courts to shaping the narrative around the positive contributions of immigrants across the nation.
As we look back on everything we have accomplished, we are hopeful for the impact we will continue to make, even in an uncertain election year ahead.
This end-of-year report shows how the Council is deploying a full suite of approaches to advance more fair, humane immigration system; inform decision-makers and the public discourse on immigration with facts and sophisticated research; and build a more welcoming, inclusive country from the ground up.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“There is no question that the situation at our southern border is dire and needs to change, and Congress and the administration must work together for us to achieve any real and lasting reforms. But the current debate recycles some of the worst ideas of the Trump-era... Our efforts should instead be focused on providing the resources necessary to process cases fairly and quickly, and help receiving communities manage the challenges they are facing. We can better manage our border without walling ourselves off from the rest of the world."
