John,
Recent rulings by conservative judges on a federal court have dealt a devastating blow to the Voting Rights Act by restricting the ability to challenge voter suppression and declaring that only the federal government -- not private citizens or civil rights groups -- can sue under a key section of this essential law.
This alarming trend of Courts empowering state legislatures to take away voting rights did not start overnight. A decade ago, the Supreme Court stripped a central component of the Voting Rights Act, a decision that opened the floodgates for Republican-controlled states to systematically erode the right to vote.
Now, more than ever, federal lawmakers must rise to defend our democracy. They must confront head-on the wave of restrictive state election laws and The Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act are our best hope.
We need federal legislation to tackle rampant voter suppression. Tell Congress to protect everyone’s freedom to vote by passing the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act!
The erosion of our most fundamental rights is further aggravated by blatant racial gerrymandering in Republican-run states. They are manipulating electoral boundaries based on race, entrenching their power at the expense of fair representation.
And proving racial gerrymandering is becoming increasingly difficult, thanks to a judiciary that is more interested in preserving power than protecting rights. This is a calculated strategy to silence communities of color.
That’s why the Freedom to Vote Act seeks to expand and protect voting rights, enhance election security, and reform campaign finance and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act aims to restore and strengthen the Voting Rights Act, requiring certain states to obtain federal approval before changing voting laws, a critical safeguard against discrimination.
We cannot stand by and watch as the rights of American voters are trampled upon. Join the fight. Tell Congress that the time to tackle rampant voter suppression is now.
Thank you for telling Congress to protect voting rights. Our democracy, our freedom, our future depends on it.
