John,
Republicans are on the verge of pushing through the most extreme and
restrictive immigration legislation in generations this week — and they
are holding Ukraine funding hostage to force these cruel and ineffective
immigration policy demands.
I won't stand for this brinkmanship and chaos from MAGA Republicans, so
I’m raising the alarm in Congress. I’ve called on my Senate colleagues to
reject this ransom demand for Ukraine aid and pass thoughtful, humane
reforms.
The GOP is fighting for policies that are so extreme they would be the
most restrictive immigration legislation since the racial quota laws of
the 1920s. They are the foundation of Donald Trump’s vision of ‘sweeping
raids, giant camps, and mass deportations’ in a potential second term.
We did not spend years fighting this agenda under Trump only to give in to
Republicans’ extreme demands now. We must enact humane, bipartisan reforms
to our broken immigration system. We need to expand lawful pathways and
provide funding to cities welcoming new asylum seekers.
Destroying the asylum system will not fix the southern border. Reports
have shown this Republican proposal would not reduce unauthorized border
crossings. It’ll only sow chaos and cruelty.
