"A vote against humanity”

On December 8, after an emergency meeting to discuss the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, the United States blocked a United Nations Security Council resolution demanding a ceasefire. The draft resolution also repeated the Security Council's demand that all parties comply with their obligations under international law, particularly to protect civilians in Palestine and Israel. Days later, the US was one of only 10 nations that voted against a UN General Assembly resolution demanding a humanitarian ceasefire, for which the overwhelming majority—153 nations—voted in favor.
“By continuing to provide diplomatic cover for the ongoing atrocities in Gaza, the US is signaling that international humanitarian law can be applied selectively—and that the lives of some people matter less than the lives of others,” said Avril Benoît, executive director of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)-USA.
