Just last week, President Trump
prophesied on national TV that it would not be long before the
then 15 U.S. COVID-19 cases would be reduced to “zero,” and then
took credit with doing a good job in making it happen. Sadly,
President Trump’s fantasy did not come true.

Today we have dozens of deaths and over a thousand infected
Americans -- with the numbers expected to grow exponentially. It
is clear that President Trump has failed the American people by
putting his head in the sand while this global pandemic
mushroomed.

To make matters worse, he has
repeatedly lied and spread misinformation about this health
emergency. His actions have helped to destabilize the economy,
and the example he sets by refusing to get tested after being
exposed to an individual who tested positive for the virus sets a
dangerously wrong message.

The U.S. government’s failure to have in place a robust
capability to test people for the coronavirus has created the
conditions where the spread of the virus is unchecked.
Fortunately, state and local governments partnering with the
private sector are taking responsibility for public health by
procuring testing capabilities, canceling mass public gatherings,
and sending workers home to telework. As individuals, we must do
all that we can to protect ourselves from the virus so that we
avoid becoming vectors for spreading the virus to others. We can:
* Wash our hands consistently for at least 20 seconds.
* Place our arm over our mouths to protect others from our coughs
& sneezes
* Use hand sanitizer.
* Regularly clean our cell phones and other exposed surfaces that
we come in contact with.
* Exercise other good health practices for your own safety and to
protect from the spread of this epidemic.
* Avoid hand shakes in favor of elbow taps or arm bumps. Avoid
large social gatherings, and try to maintain six feet of distance
when outside the home.

My friends, times will probably get worse before they get
better, but we have overcome difficult times before, and we most
certainly will rise to this challenge and beat adversity again!
No matter what happens, we must defeat Donald Trump and elect Joe
Biden in November! But meanwhile, let’s do all that we can to
keep ourselves and others safe, let’s keep the faith, and let’s
get through this together. It is always darkest before the dawn!

Yours,

Rep. Hank Johnson
