How Anxiety Became Content - The Atlantic

The way we commonly discuss mental-health issues, especially on the internet, isn’t helping us.

Anxiety has become its own genre of popular content. Social-media feeds are crowded with therapy influencers who tell us to be more aware of our anxiety, our trauma, our distress. Instagram is full of anxious confessions and therapy-speak. The TikTok hashtag #Trauma has more than 6 billion views. According to Listen Notes, a podcast search engine, more than 5,500 podcasts have the word trauma in their title. Celebrity media are awash with mental-health testimonials, and summaries of those testimonials, including “39 Celebrities Who Have Opened Up About Mental Health,” “What 22 Celebrities Have Said About Having Depression,” and “12 Times Famous Men Got Real About Mental Health.”

As anxiety has become content, it’s also become a part of more daily conversations. I’ve spoken with many parents about my work on America’s mental-health crisis in the past few years, and several have noted that their kids share their symptoms and diagnoses in group chats, rattling off the acronyms OCD, GAD, and PTSD with a casualness once reserved for high-school gossip.

Japan is a cuddlier friend to South-East Asia than America or China - The Economist

Asian geopolitics is often described in terms of two giants: America, the incumbent superpower, and China, a rising one, standing astride the region and competing to pull smaller countries to their sides, including the ten members of ASEAN, the Association of South-East Asian Nations. But this misses a lot. It elides smaller countries’ agency and oversimplifies what is rarely a Manichaean divide. It also ignores the pivotal role of another rich power with strong ties: Japan.

For many South-East Asian countries, Japan offers a vital hedge against the rival powers, as a source of capital, technology and aid. Over the past decade, Japanese foreign direct investment into ASEAN countries has totalled $198bn, behind America’s $209bn, but beating China’s $106bn. Japanese firms covet South-East Asia’s growing markets, and policymakers see the region as a xxxxxx against Chinese expansionism. Sustained engagement, from mediating regional conflicts to building regional institutions, has helped Japan accumulate substantial influence. According to a survey of South-East Asian researchers, businesspeople and policymakers by the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore, Japan is the region’s most trusted outside partner.

That trust will be on display in Tokyo on December 16th-18th, when Japan’s prime minister, Kishida Fumio, welcomes the leaders of nine ASEAN members and Timor Leste. The gathering will mark the 50th anniversary of dialogues between Japan and ASEAN, which began with contentious talks over synthetic rubber. It will also be a moment to recalibrate the relationship, as the power dynamic between Japan and ASEAN members shifts, competition for influence grows, and security fears intensify.

ASK EUROPEANS about their most promising source of domestic green energy and many would point to the North Sea. More than 15 gigawatts (GW) of offshore-wind farms have been installed, a number supposed to grow to at least 300GW by 2050. But another promising source is opening up farther south. Governments in Europe want the Mediterranean, with its ample sunshine, to turn itself quickly into a green-hydrogen hotbed.

The solar and wind maps below show the vast potential of the region. Spain, for example, basks in a daily average of 4.6 kilowatt-hours of sunlight per square metre and Morocco in 5.6kwh, double what Germany can expect. In parts of northern Africa both sun and wind are abundant, forming a rare sweet spot that could power electrolysers, the machines that use electricity to split water into oxygen and hydrogen. “There are only ten such locations around the world,” explains Benedikt Ortmann, who runs the solar business of BayWa, a German energy-and-construction company.

If plans for Europe’s southern powerhouse go well they will give the continent access to plenty of cheap renewable energy and allow it to clean up its carbon-spewing heavy industry. But the development of renewable-energy projects in the region lags behind that in the north.

Will Former NYSE Boss Tom Farley Be The Next Crypto King? - Forbes

What do you do for an encore after running the New York Stock Exchange for five years? For Tom Farley, the answer is move headlong into crypto.

Last month, CoinDesk, the leading news website devoted to digital assets, disclosed that it had been purchased by crypto exchange Bullish, where Farley is currently the chief executive officer. A day later on CNBC, Farley confirmed that his budding exchange was also a potential buyer of FTX. When asked what would happen if Bullish acquired the exchange out of bankruptcy, Farley stated “I'm limited with respect to what I can say contractually. But look, we are hanging around the rim with FTX.”

Farley, who refused interview requests by Forbes, apparently prefers stealth mode when it comes to company disclosures. After leading a failed attempt to merge his Far Peak Acquisition with Bullish via a $600 million special-purpose acquisition company in 2022, Farley appeared as its CEO early in May 2023, without any public announcement. Bullish did not respond to requests for information about how and under what terms Farley was hired, but a person familiar with the situation confirmed that his employment was not publicized. He was identified in a Bullish press release as the CEO on May 2 and his LinkedIn profile shows he began that month.
