THE WEEKLY REVEAL

Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023

Hello! In this issue:

  • The loss of civilian life in Gaza and Israel has sparked outrage and protest, but a group of grieving parents continues quietly working for peace.
  • Florida pregnancy centers get millions in taxpayer money but little state oversight.
  • Some good news from Reveal.

THIS WEEK’S PODCAST

Gaza: A War of Weapons and Words

This week, we focus on the Israeli and Palestinian conflict and its ripples throughout the world.

First, Reveal host Al Letson speaks with members of the Parents Circle: Israeli and Palestinian parents who have lost children on both sides of the long-standing conflict and work together now for peace.

Next, reporter Shaina Shealy examines the flow of U.S. weapons transfers to Israel. Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack prompted a rush to send arms to the Israeli military, but some experts say that important safeguards meant to prevent weapons from being used on civilians are being ignored. We examine a policy introduced by the Biden administration earlier this year, which some argue is being bypassed, and a recently proposed weapons package that waives standard oversight provisions.

We end with a story from Reveal’s Najib Aminy about student protests at Columbia University in New York and the heated debate over free speech on college campuses. Soon after the Oct. 7 attack, university officials and student groups issued a series of statements about the Hamas attack and Israel’s response. This led to an escalation of tensions between student protesters and the school’s administration. Columbia and other universities have come under increasing pressure from students, politicians and donors about how they’ve responded to student demonstrations.

How Anti-Abortion Pregnancy Centers in Florida Get Taxpayer Funds With Almost No Oversight

Mary’s Pregnancy Resource Center, a crisis pregnancy center in Broward County, Fla., had received more than $2.2 million in taxpayer funds over the last decade from the state’s alternatives-to-abortion program. Credit: Lauren Witte/Miami Herald

Florida gives millions in taxpayer dollars to a nonprofit that’s charged with distributing the money to pregnancy centers that steer people away from abortion. This year, the state drastically increased its support of the “alternatives-to-abortion” initiative to more than $29 million. But financial troubles at one pregnancy center highlight gaps in state oversight of the organizations that receive the money.

When Chelsea Goodrich brought allegations to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that her father sexually abused her, she suspected the church held key evidence in the form of her father’s religious confession. But the Mormon church refused to allow a bishop to testify against him – and then offered her and her mother a $300,000 settlement if they promised to never sue the church over its handling of what happened to them.
