Learn more about what my office has been up to this week Dear john, This week marked a painful anniversary--the commemoration of the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting in 2012 when 20 children and 6 adults were murdered in their classrooms. The American people are tired of living in fear and tired of being the only nation in the world where gun violence terrifies our kids and our families. That is why we must continue to act. On Wednesday, I was very proud to speak at the White House as Vice President Harris launched the Safer States Initiative, which will provide state governments with federal resources aimed at ending gun violence. Earlier in the week, I took action to improve transparency in our education and workforce systems. On Monday, I introduced the CREATES Act, federal legislation that establishes a grant program to assist states in building their own public credential repositories to provide greater transparency for students, job seekers, workers, and employers. During a House Committee on Education and Workforce markup Wednesday, we voted to approve H.R. 6655, A Stronger Workforce for America Act. This bipartisan legislation includes a majority of my bill, the TRAIN Act, introduced last week. It also includes portions of the Adult Education WORKS Act, introduced in October. Additional sections of the bill are inspired by the CREATES Act. On Thursday, I was thrilled to announce that the cities of Peachtree Corners and Lilburn are the recipients of two Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant awards. Peachtree Corners will receive $309,600 to develop a comprehensive safety action plan, and to pilot traffic camera/sensors at targeted intersections where there are high volumes of traffic and pedestrians. Lilburn will receive $260,000 to develop a city-wide comprehensive safety action plan, conduct a roundabout feasibility study, and to pilot temporary traffic calming measures such as planters, chicanes, and speed humps.
