This week marked 11 years since the devastating shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. In just seconds, 26 children and teachers were brutally murdered. I was only a kid when this tragedy occurred, but as I’ve grown up, similar tragedies have kept happening.

I’ve often asked myself: How do we continue to let children, educators, and our families experience such pain and loss? But in the years since gun violence impacted my own family, I’ve learned why: Members of Congress have failed to protect the next generation from gun violence in America because they are more concerned with protecting the gun lobby’s interests and their own bottom lines.

My name is Robert Schentrup and my sister, Carmen Schentrup, was one of the 17 victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, FL. My family faced insurmountable pain when Carmen was killed — one that’s hard to even put into words.

But my pain has turned to outrage because I’ve continued to watch NRA-backed lawmakers block solutions to protect America’s youth. One of those solutions is a ban on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines, the same weapons used to kill my sister. From Sandy Hook to Parkland and Uvalde, these weapons of war will continue to kill Americans unless we take action to ban them, once and for all.

And that’s why I’m writing to you today. I’m working with Brady and Team ENOUGH to demand Congress ban assault weapons. Will you join us, friend? Please, do it for me, my sister, Carmen, and every young person who has grown up in fear of being gunned down in their classroom. [[link removed]]

GOOD NEWS: Naperville, IL, and Statewide Assault Weapon Bans Withstand Gun Industry Challenge in U.S. Supreme Court

On Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court denied a gun industry request to halt a ban on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines in Illinois and a ban on the commercial sale of assault weapons in the city of Naperville, IL. These life-saving laws, which are supported by the majority of Illinois residents, were passed in the aftermath of the deadly July 4, 2022, shooting in Highland Park, IL, when a gunman used an assault weapon to kill seven people and injure dozens of others, including children.

The gun industry’s request was considered by the full Supreme Court, and no Justice noted a dissent from the denial. Now, this matter will head back to the district court for further review.

Donor Spotlight: Ken Ludlum

As we head into the holiday season, we’re proud to recognize supporters of Brady who fuel our life-saving mission to free America from gun violence. This week, that generous supporter is Ken Ludlum, a member of Brady’s Northern California Regional Leadership Council (RLC) [[link removed]] , a long-time Brady donor, and the former chief financial officer of various medical technology and biotechnology companies.

Ken’s connection to the gun violence prevention movement stems from the early 1990s when he first learned about Brady, which was at the time called Handgun Control Inc [[link removed]] . Our work struck a nerve, so Ken began to donate in small, regular ways. In 2022, Ken joined Brady’s Northern California RLC, providing him with ways to contribute his time and energy, in addition to his financial contributions. Ken’s passion for this cause is palpable: As he said, “I will be doing this until I cannot anymore!”

In a movement that can often leave many fatigued and overwhelmed, what keeps Ken hopeful about ending gun violence is the momentum he sees. Ken noted, “There seems to be overwhelming support among the populous,” and he is hopeful that we “are at some type of tipping point.” When he’s not volunteering with Brady, you can find Ken traveling, skiing, and sailing.
