John,
We've come to the end of our Anniversary year. But with COP28 concluding in a compromise agreement, it's clear we need Green MPs more urgently than ever to make the case at home and abroad for bold and ambitious climate action.🔽

Co-leader Carla Denyer called on the Government to take urgent action to go beyond the compromise deal agreed at COP28. Agreeing to ‘transition’ away from fossil fuels falls far short of the fair phase out needed, she said. That means it is more important than ever to press for ambitious climate policies, including the cancelling of new oil and gas licenses and increased investment in renewable energy.

Caroline Lucas MP voted against the “cruel and immoral” Rwanda Bill in the House of Commons this week, describing it as a flagrant attack on our human rights and the courts. In an article for the Mirror, she writes everyone wants to stop people crossing the Channel in small inflatable boats, but the way to do this is not by sliding into authoritarianism but safe, legal routes for asylum seekers.

Reacting to the news the UK had abstained in a UN Security Council vote on a ceasefire in Gaza, Global Solidarity spokesperson Carne Ross told LBC the government’s position was a disgrace. There has to be a ceasefire, he said. War crimes are being committed with indiscriminate killings, forced displacement of people, and collective punishment through the denial of food, fuel and other supplies.

Former deputy leader Amelia Womack, who was part of all female Global Green delegation which travelled to Cop28, reacts to the final agreement.
“This COP proves that we can't be reliant on international negotiations to solve the climate crisis. Finding global consensus will always represent the vested interests of some governments and maintaining the status quo of a world heavily dependent on extraction and pollution.
While the mention of transitioning away from fossil fuels is an indication that we are marking the beginning of the end of the fossil fuel era, it has taken far too long to get here and represents the bare minimum of what we need to do.
|
The statement also fails to address the fact that we need a phase out of all fossil fuels and genuine adaptation finance. It is non-binding too, leaving a glaring loophole where countries evading accountability for emissions remain unchecked.
This is a wake up call that to truly tackle the climate emergency, we must take action at every level, whether local, national or international. We must raise the ambitions of every country and as Greens we are perfectly positioned to drive transformation in the UK and globally.”
