Your Latest Briefing from the Liberal Democrats. | | What a year itās been John... | From the sensational local elections in May, gaining 12 councils and over 400 councillors, to our incredible by-election win in Somerton & Frome, where Sarah Dyke became our 15th MP!
We returned to in-person Conferences, passing a host of fantastic policies, including our pre-manifesto, For A Fair Deal.
And we held this Conservative Government to account on the cost-of-living crisis, obscene NHS wait times, rampant sewage pollution and many more crises happening under their watch.
We have laid an incredible foundation for 2024 and the General Election!
With that same passion and energy, we can win more seats and ensure the country gets the representation it deserves.
But we have to be ready now!
John, can you donate to our General Election-fighting fund today to ensure the Conservative Government falls in 2024? | | For everything you have done in 2023 - we cannot say thank you enough.
Hereās to another year of working together to improve the lives of people across the country. | | - Sewage victim compensation
- Family Breakup Bill

| | | Sewage victim compensation amendment | This December, the Liberal Democrats proposed an amendment to the Victims and Prisoners Bill calling for compensation for those getting ill from sewage in waterways.
With a significant increase in sites being rated āpoor qualityā, and as more illegal discharges are revealed, it would only be right for water companies to fund this compensation, especially as they enjoy high profits and pay millions in bonuses to their CEOs.
But the Conservatives showed their contempt for sewage pollution yet again by voting the amendment down.
Even when a solution is handed to them on a plate, they still bat the issue away.
The Liberal Democrats will keep fighting to hold water companies and this Conservative government to account and get justice for the victims of this sewage scandal. | | ā²ļø Est. reading time: 2 mins | Will you back our STOP SEWAGE DUMPING campaign? | | | Family Breakup Bill | Last week, the Conservatives announced a slew of half-baked new measures aimed at curbing migration.
The incredibly high salary requirements for spousal visas has caused confusion and anxiety for countless families, left wondering if they will be torn apart as a result.
Our country is better than this. Liberal Democrats will keep fighting for a fairer immigration system that treats everyone with dignity and respect - and that means opposing these changes.
These rules will only make it harder for British businesses and the NHS to recruit the workers which they need, and for families to be reunited in the UK.
Our MPs have raised these concerns with the Home Secretary, and will keep pushing for a reversal of these new proposals. | | Incredible by-election results | The Lib Dems continue to take great strides in council by-elections up and down the country.
Congratulations to Cllr Allison Wren for her fantastic GAIN from the Conservatives in Hertfordshire, to Cllr Adrian Whittle for his GAIN from the Conservatives in North Kesteven, and to Cllr Dan Sladden and the team in North Yorkshire for their huge GAIN from the Greens.
And well done also to councillors and campaign teams in North Norfolk, St Albans, Cambridge, the Cotswolds, Three Rivers, Swale, Rugby and Powys for their wins!
What an incredible set of results! | | | And hereās why we need more results like this⦠| Recent developments show how Lib Dem-led councils have taken great strides to help their local communities and tackle the big issues of today.
Somerset Council has been recognised as a leader in its work to respond to the climate emergency by CDP, a charity which reports on environmental matters.
The council was rated A- (āLeadershipā) thanks to their climate projects, such as expanding electric vehicle charging points and retrofitting homes to boost heat efficiency. | | ā²ļø Est. reading time: 1 min | Meanwhile, Watford Borough Council has upgraded over 135 socially rented homes through grant-funded insulation. Not only will the occupants feel warmer and have lower energy bills, but the changes will reduce the propertiesā carbon emissions by over 170 tonnes per year. | | ā²ļø Est. reading time: 2 mins | Well done to both councils and to all our councillors across the country who are working hard for their communities. | | | Work for Us | Weāve got a wide variety of vacancies - both paid and voluntary - currently available. If youāre keen to contribute in whatever capacity suits you best, weād love to hear from you! | | | This time of year is full of celebration. Whether youāre enjoying Christmas, Hanukkah, or another holiday ā we hope your festive season is filled with warmth, kindness, and the company of loved ones.
We know that for many this can be a difficult time, and it is impossible to ignore that for some communities this year, it will be particularly poignant.
