"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
Friend,
As our nation grapples with the effects of the coronavirus, President Trump and Congress have diligently worked to mitigate the situation and provide assistance and guidance for families.
Congress has now passed two bipartisan bills that provide greater funding for the CDC and our medical professions, ensures testing is free and available to those that need it, and assists those who are ill or caring for someone suffering from COVID-19. And on Friday, President Trump declared a national emergency, opening up more resources to better combat this viral infection.
The CDC continues to remind us to take basic precautionary steps like washing our hands often for 20 seconds, staying home if we are sick, covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue, and avoiding touching our nose, mouth, and eyes.
But today, the president is calling on all of us.
Today the president has called for a National Day of Prayer for our country. I'm asking you to join me as we pray for peace among the hearts of our citizens, healing for those who are sick, and comfort for the families grieving.
Throughout our nation's history, countless men and women have sought the wisdom and guidance of our Creator. In 1787, as our Founding Fathers were meeting in Philadelphia during the Constitutional Convention, Benjamin Franklin rose to speak to his fellow Americans, saying, "I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth—that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid?"
Certainly we have done our part in planning and preparing. Together, we can participate in the most powerful action of prayer.
While your church may or may not be meeting this morning, I hope you take a moment to pray and reflect on II Timothy 1:7, which says, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
Today is not a day for fear, but for prayer. Let us pray for the United States of America and our friends around the world.
Sincerely,
Rep. Ron Estes
