Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) proposed legislation in the Senate that would mandate paid sick leave, aid to local food banks, and cover the cost of testing for the virus, among other steps to help Americans deal with this public health crisis.
But Lamar Alexander (R-TN) decided he’d rather block the bill and let the Senate wring its hands while more and more Americans suffer.
This is the GOP’s go-to response to any crisis affecting non-rich Americans: they dragged their heels with relief to Puerto Rico for Hurricane Maria, refused to act on lowering the skyrocketing price of prescription drugs, and now they’re stopping critical aid from reaching the communities most affected.
It’s become clearer than ever just how important it is that Democrats win up and down the ticket.
We need a Democratic Senate that won’t acquit Trump of every crime, won’t confirm every anti-choice judge he nominates, and will actually act on progressive legislation.
Democrats need 4 seats to flip the Senate in 2020, and right now, we have our eyes on flipping as many as 8, but we have to turn out the vote to make sure that happens.
