Felony Disenfranchisement ([link removed]) Should Concern All Americans ([link removed])

By DeAnna Hoskins

Here are some wins for voters.
* A Minnesota judge dismissed ([link removed]) a lawsuit challenging a new state law that restores voting rights to people convicted of a felony upon release from incarceration. A conservative group argued the law violated the state constitution. The law remains in place.
* An order requiring North Dakota to redraw legislative districts remains in effect, the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled. A lower court found that the map violated Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and ordered lawmakers to draw new districts by Dec. 22.
* The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected ([link removed]) Louisiana's request to reconsider the right of private parties to sue to enforce Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. Had the Circuit accepted Louisiana's request, it could have severely weakened enforcement of the Voting Rights Act. Learn more about the private right to sue under Section 2 here ([link removed]) .
* The Kansas Supreme Court ruled ([link removed]) that a lower court must hear a challenge to a state law that organizations say makes it harder for them to conduct voter registration. The lawsuit alleges that the law violates the state constitution.

Here are some other updates.
* Rudy Giuliani was ordered ([link removed]) to pay over $148 million in damages to Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, two Georgia election workers he baselessly accused of voter fraud after the 2020 election.
* The Michigan Court of Appeals affirmed ([link removed]) that former President Donald Trump can be on the state’s presidential primary ballot. The ruling does not prohibit a later challenge to his placement on the general election ballot.
* Alabama Senator Katie Britt (R) introduced ([link removed]) legislation to prevent noncitizens from voting in federal elections, despite the fact that the practice is already illegal.
* The 5th Circuit paused ([link removed]) an order that struck down part of Texas voter suppression law Senate Bill 1 as the state appeals the decision. The lower court found that the provision violates the Civil Rights Act.
* The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard Mark Meadows’ request to move his Fulton County, Georgia 2020 election subversion ([link removed]) charges from state court to federal court. The lower court rejected his petition to do that.

A new episode of Defending Democracy dropped today! Lawsuits across the country are using the 14th Amendment to challenge Trump’s eligibility to run for president. Marc and Paige discussed where the cases stand and the timeline for litigation. Listen on Apple ([link removed]) , Spotify
