Friend,
Free Press turned 20 on Aug. 14, 2023 — marking two decades of our fight to transform our media system.
None of our accomplishments would have been possible without dedicated supporters like YOU who share our commitment to creating a world where people have the information and opportunities they need to tell their own stories, hold leaders accountable and participate in our democracy.
So, as we celebrate a monumental year, we have put together a timeline of our work over our first two decades — a timeline that is only scratching the surface of our big moments. Take a look:
2003: Free Press is born, and 3 million people speak out for local media
2006: We launch Save the Internet, the first-ever U.S. campaign for Net Neutrality
2008: Our advocacy leads to an FCC investigation into Comcast for illegally blocking internet traffic
2010: Free Press protests outside Google for striking a pact with Verizon that jeopardizes Net Neutrality. The deal later falls apart.
2011: We push Obama to sign the Local Community Radio Act, making room for hundreds of new noncommercial stations
2012: 100,000 websites go dark in a day of action we organized to protest SOPA and PIPA web-censorship bills
2015: We help generate a historic win for comprehensive Title II Net Neutrality rules
2017: We help organize 700 protests in response to FCC Chairman Pai’s plan to destroy Net Neutrality
2018: New Jersey passes the Civic Info Bill — legislation Free Press Action helped craft — to strengthen local journalism in the state
2020: Media 2070 launches to fight racism in the media
2021: Free Press Action helps secure billions for broadband in a major infrastructure bill
2023: FREE PRESS TURNS 20! 🥳🎂🎉
In the years ahead, we’ll be working to create new big moments, those sparks and flashpoints that awaken people — many, many more people — to new possibilities.
That’s why we’re excited to announce that a generous donor is offering to MATCH every donation, dollar for dollar, up to a total of $50,000 by Dec. 31. Now is a great time to give $20 — or any amount — because your donation will be DOUBLED and help sustain the next 20 years of Free Press.
