The Week in Review

Happy Friday!

I hope you had a wonderful week. I am grateful to serve you all in the 118th Congress. Read below to see what I’ve been working on this week.

Opposing the 2024 Pricey and Woke Annual Military Spending Bill

I could not support this year’s NDAA—expensive legislation that does nothing to enhance military readiness and continues warrantless government surveillance on Americans. The NDAA funds and sets policy for the U.S. Department of Defense and national security programs at the U.S. Department of Energy for the upcoming fiscal year.

This legislation authorizes spending nearly $1 trillion of taxpayer money that we do not have. It grants more than $600 million for a forever war in Ukraine. The Biden White House has still not indicated what victory looks like in Ukraine.

The NDAA allows Biden to continue using taxpayer funds on abortion, transgender surgeries and drag shows. That doesn't prepare our servicemembers to combat adversaries like China and Russia.

The bill provides our servicemembers with an insufficient, 5.2% pay raise. When accounting for Joe Biden’s out-of-control inflation figures, there is virtually no raise. Our servicemembers deserve much better for defending our freedoms.

This year’s NDAA reauthorizes the FISA 702 spying authority with zero meaningful reforms. This means that our intelligence community can continue to conduct warrantless surveillance campaigns on Americans without penalty. I recently introduced major legislation titled the Protect Liberty and End Warrantless Surveillance Act (The Protect Liberty Act) to reform the FISA 702 spying authority. It requires a warrant for all U.S. person searches, with reasonable exceptions for national security concerns, addresses numerous loopholes in federal law to end this unconstitutional practice, and ensures rogue agents are held accountable. It received bipartisan, bicameral support and passed out of the House Judiciary Committee in a 35-2 vote. Unfortunately, rather than schedule this bill for a vote before the end of the year, Speaker Johnson decided to extend the authority into next year with no reforms to protect Americans' privacy.

With all of this considered, I voted against this year’s NDAA because it does not serve the best interests of the U.S. military or our country.

Launching Impeachment Inquiry Into Joe Biden

Republicans in the House unanimously voted to launch an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. While Oversight, Judiciary, and Ways & Means Committee investigations have been ongoing, passage of this inquiry increases our standing in court and our ability to expedite requested information.

Democrats continue to spew the narrative that we have no evidence to impeach Joe Biden, but this is just not true. We have mountains of evidence of Biden’s bribery and influence-peddling schemes. We have unveiled tens of thousands of pages of bank records and nearly 200 Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) indicating foul play. We have additionally collected incriminating text messages, emails, and testimony from the Biden family and their business associates. The Left can’t admit to having a liar and a fraud in the White House. Biden must be impeached and removed from public office.

The enhanced investigation will continue over the next several months, and House Republicans will not give up until justice is served.

This week, Hunter Biden additionally defied our committee’s lawfully issued subpoena requiring him to show up for a deposition before the committee.

Rather than attend his deposition, Hunter led a press conference in front of the Capitol steps. He refused to come into the Capitol building unless he was granted a public hearing.

Hunter Biden is not above the law nor does he get any special privilege due to his last name. A witness has no right to command or direct how a Congressional Committee receives his testimony.  The witness does not run the committee, rather Members of Congress organize and preside over the committees.

Hunter’s actions will have consequences. Our committee is preparing to hold him in Contempt of Congress, where he will be referred to the Department of Justice for criminal prosecution. I’ll keep you posted.

House Judiciary Committee Activity

I chaired a hearing in the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance titled “Second Amendment Rights Empower Women’s Rights.”

In this hearing, witnesses provided testimony on how firearms and our Second Amendment help provide them safety and security amid lawlessness in most major cities across the United States. Law-abiding citizens should always be able to defend themselves from danger at all times.

I thank Beth Alcazar, member of U.S. Concealed Carry Association, Geneva Solomon, owner of Redstone Firearms, and Shirley Watral, Florida State Director for Women for Gun Rights, for providing their insights to the committee. I will continue to advocate for our Second Amendment rights at the congressional level.

Speaking on Biden's Border Crisis on the House Floor

I spoke on the House Floor to amplify the dangers of Biden’s border crisis. Our country cannot withstand another year of the Biden administration’s open border policies. Under this administration, border agents have apprehended roughly 4 million illegal aliens—an all-time record—with millions more who crossed illegally but got away.

These massive illegal immigration flows will forever change the fabric of our country.

My remarks may be found here.
