By now, you have likely seen reports about negotiations happening in the Senate over supplemental funding for military aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. In exchange, the Biden administration and other Democratic leaders are offering to adopt policies that would cause irreparable harm to our immigration system and immigrant communities nationwide.
These negotiations are ongoing, so we are asking you to contact key senators and let them know you oppose this deal.
WHAT'S AT STAKE
Reportedly, the Biden administration has offered:
- Making expedited removal nation-wide, allowing for ICE to detain and deport people anywhere in the country without a hearing in front of a judge.
- A Title 42-type policy that allows for mass expulsions at the border without access to our protection systems.
- Mandatory detention for many of those entering the United States, including families.
History has shown that similar policies won’t achieve what the administration says it wants: to reduce the number of people coming to our borders. Instead, they will create both cruelty and chaos.
The negotiators want to rush this terrible package through for a vote early next week.
It’s not too late to stop the deal. Most members of Congress aren’t involved in the talks and don’t understand just how harmful these changes would be.
But every hour counts. Democratic and Independent senators need to hear from the public NOW that these policies are unacceptable.
