John,
Recently, the story of Kate Cox has captivated, saddened, and angered many
across the country.
Cox, a 31-year-old mother of two, filed a lawsuit seeking to end a
pregnancy that her doctors deemed unviable and high-risk. Cox’s doctors
have clearly stated that continuing the pregnancy not only threatened her
life but could also impact her future fertility.
After challenging the ban in court, Cox was initially granted permission
to undergo the procedure from a district judge. However, this week the
staunchly conservative nine-member Texas Supreme Court unanimously ruled
against her, even after she left the state to receive the essential care
she needed.
John, this is yet
another moment in the post-Roe world we find ourselves in. A world where
non-medical professionals are making medical decisions without knowing
anything about pregnancy, medicine, or Kate’s life.
For someone who has a comment or opinion about almost everything, it’s
been very jarring to hear our part-time senator — the very same person
who’s openly called for a national abortion ban — be uncharacteristically
silent.
Both Cruz and fellow Senator John Cornyn repeatedly dodged reporter's
questions this past week. So, why would they do this?
It's simple,
John. Republicans like Ted
*know* that the overwhelming majority of the country (and the state)
strongly disapproves of their backward and cruel anti-choice policies.
A proposed national abortion ban that people like Ted have floated is
deeply unpopular. And as we’ve seen both this year and in last year’s
midterm elections, abortion and reproductive rights continue to be a
salient political issue, especially in a post-Roe world.
As we all continue to navigate a world without the protections of Roe, we
must remember exactly who is pushing these extreme abortion bans on the
rest of us and vote them out accordingly.
That fight starts in Texas. [ [link removed] ]So if you can, please consider pitching
into our grassroots movement as we work to Cut Cruz from the Senate and
elect a pro-choice leader in his place.
