Overview: Today's weekly will be the last for 2023; the first for 2024 will be on January 5.
The 118th Congress ends its first session next week, though Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is asking the Senate to stay during recess. All members of Congress will return at the beginning of next year to negotiate again on appropriations bills for FY2024. In the meantime, the Senate and House passed the National Defense Authorization Act (FY2024) this week, sending it to President Biden for his signature.
Economy: In the week ending December 9, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims ([link removed]) was 202,000, a decrease of 19,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised up by 1,000 from 220,000 to 221,000. The 4-week moving average was 213,250, a decrease of 7,750 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised up by 250 from 220,750 to 221,000.
