Transparency and Accountability in U.S. Financial Dealings with Iran
On Wednesday, during a recent hearing of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations with the House Financial Services Committee, I addressed a matter of great concern– the Biden Administration's handling of Iranian funds and the potential implications of terrorism funding and regional stability.
|
The hearing, titled "Moving the Money Part 2: Getting Answers from the Biden Administration on the Iranian Regime’s Support of Terrorism," scrutinized the transfer of $6 billion in restricted Iranian funds from South Korea to Qatar and the release of funds related to Iraq’s purchase of electricity from Iran. These transactions raise critical questions about the Administration's commitment to preventing the flow of funds to a regime known for its participation in terrorism.
During the hearing, I highlighted the inadequate reporting to Congress regarding these financial transactions. The report provided only a single sentence on the Payment Transfer of authority and the November Ranchi electric waiver. Such lack of transparency is unacceptable.
I questioned the justification behind the waivers granted to France, Italy, and Oman, allowing them to purchase petroleum products from Iran despite having sufficient reserves. The Administration's reasoning seems tenuous and requires more substantive evidence. The lack of clarity and transparency in these decisions is concerning.
I further pointed out the historical context, recalling the Obama administration's transfer of billions in cash to Iran, a method prone to obscuring the funds' end-use. These past actions, coupled with the current Administration's opaque dealings, suggest a pattern of enabling Iran's access to substantial resources without sufficient oversight.
I emphasized that our nation’s security and our commitment to fighting terrorism must be paramount. Yet, the Administration’s actions, in my view, seem to contradict these principles.
I remain committed to ensuring that our foreign policy is aligned with our national security interests and uphold the highest standards of transparency and accountability. The American people deserve clear and honest answers about our dealings with regimes like Iran, especially when they involve significant financial transactions. I will continue to advocate for the safety and well-being of our nation and its allies. |
Central Texas: A Technology Leader
I also had a recent meeting in Washington D.C. with folks from Samsung about the upcoming semiconductor plant in Taylor, Texas. This facility, located in our Texas 17th Congressional District, marks a significant step in the global semiconductor industry, making our district a key player in this crucial sector.
|
The Samsung plant will be a catalyst for job creation, bringing thousands of high-tech, well-paying positions to our area. This boosts not just our local economy but also positions us as leaders in advanced manufacturing and technology. Moreover, the plant plays a critical role in national security by ensuring a domestic supply of essential semiconductors, thereby strengthening our technological infrastructure.
I was particularly impressed by Samsung's commitment to sustainability and community development. Their investment in educational initiatives, like the Samsung Skills Center for the Taylor Independent School District, shows a dedication to building a bright future and equipping our youth with necessary life skills.
I am grateful for Samsung's investment in our district and to all who continue to work on this monumental project.

Protecting the Interests of America's Farmers
On Tuesday of this week, I met with the Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) about the 2022 Emergency Relief Program (ERP). The changes of the 2022 ERP, particularly the introduction of a progressive payment methodology, present significant concerns, particularly in terms of reduced monetary support for our farmers and ranchers. A 350-acre farm, under the 2022 ERP, will see an 85% reduction in support benefits compared to the 2020/2021 ERP.
|
Supporting farmers and addressing these concerns are priorities for me. The TFB, headquartered in our district, plays a vital role in advocating for the interests of our agricultural community. Their work, especially in challenging times, is crucial for the sustainability and prosperity of our agricultural sector.
It's disappointing that our collective efforts to address these concerns with the USDA have not yet received the attention they deserve. I am dedicated to ensuring that the voices of our farmers and ranchers are heard. It is imperative that their needs and concerns of our agricultural community are addressed effectively and efficiently.
Rest assured, I am committed to advocating for our district's farmers and ranchers. I will continue to monitor this situation closely and take all necessary steps to support the interests of our agricultural community. Working together, we will strive for a resolution that honors the hard work and resilience of our farmers and ranchers. |
Addressing Resource Allocation for Veterans' Care
I recently joined my colleagues in sending a letter to Secretary Denis McDonough of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), raising important questions about the VA's involvement in processing medical claims for illegal immigrants in ICE custody. This initiative has come under scrutiny amidst the current border crisis and ongoing concerns about the quality of care provided to our veterans. The concern lies in whether the diversion of VA resources could impact the primary mission of caring for our veterans. My colleagues and I are fighting hard to secure the border and prevent the barrage of illegal migrants across our Texas border. But in the meantime, we must not compromise the availability of health care for Veterans by diverting resources. The VA is responsible for honoring our nation's promise to care for those who have bravely served. Any potential diversion of resources from their mission calls for scrutiny and immediate attention.
|
The current situation emphasizes broader issues within the VA system, including challenges in staffing, backlogs in processing claims, and difficulties in accessing community care. These are longstanding problems that we must address to ensure that our veterans receive the care and support they deserve. Our veterans have made immense sacrifices for our country, and we must ensure that they receive the highest level of care and support. We must prioritize their needs and ensure that the VA is fully equipped and focused on serving those who have served us.

H.R. 6783, the Capital Markets Financing and Economic Growth Investments Act of 2023
I am excited to share with you about a bill I introduced this week, H.R. 6783, the Capital Markets Financing and Economic Growth Investments Act of 2023. I introduced this bill to bring significant enhancements to the financial regulatory framework of our country, focusing on protecting investor choices and increasing flexibility within the U.S. capital markets.
The introduction of the Capital Markets Financing and Economic Growth Investments Act of 2023 represents a significant stride towards recalibrating the U.S. financial system. This bill is meticulously crafted to ensure robust investor protection and enhanced market flexibility. Our goal is to catalyze economic growth while fortifying investor confidence. By modernizing regulations and providing more leeway for market dynamics, we are paving the way for a thriving, resilient, and adaptable financial landscape that is crucial in today's rapidly evolving global economy.
