There’s something extra special about Michigan during the holidays – and Hollywood seems to heartedly agree! Did you know that Michigan is the location for a surprising number of Christmas movies? As you’re putting together your holiday movie list, here are a few additions since you’ll certainly recognize some of our beautiful small towns on the screen:

“Christmas at the Holly Hotel” follows a woman whose parents, the owners of a historic hotel in Holly, Michigan, ask her to come home from New York City for Christmas.

“Cupid’s Christmas,” also filmed in Holly, stars real-life Police Chief Jerry Narsh in the role of the police chief, with the fictional town raising money to save the historic train depot, just like the real town of Holly.

“Miracle on Christmas” was filmed entirely in Brighton, and follows a small-town family and their struggles to come together for the holidays.

Also shot in Brighton: “A Christmas Winter Song,” which features singer Ashanti playing a Christmas shop owner who helps a former jazz singer reconnect with his family.

“Small Town Santa” starring Dean Cain is a classic home-invasion gone wrong Christmas story that was filmed and set in Rockford, Michigan.

“A Dog for Christmas” starring Dean Cain and Richard Karn, was also filmed in Rockford, MI and the majority of the cast and crew are Michigan natives.

Some honorable mentions include: “Polar Express” – the author of the book, Chris Van Allsburg, was born and raised in Grand Rapids, “Santa Clause I, II, and III” – Tim Allen, who stars as Santa, was raised in Southeast Michigan and attended Western Michigan University, and the newest Chevy commercial which, if you haven’t seen, is a real tear jerker, and again filmed in Holly: link

As you make your holiday plans, consider cozying up with a locally-shot movie and see if you can spot your favorite hangouts. You can check them out on most streaming services.

And as we’re getting in the holiday spirit and looking towards the end of the year, I would love your help ahead of the important FEC fundraising deadline this month. If you’re in the giving spirit, please consider helping us reach our very real fundraising goal.
