Thursday marked the end of Washington’s 2020 legislative session. In this short session, we saw some big wins. The legislature passed much-needed bills, centralizing the state’s background check system, protecting our youngest kids from gun violence, creating a first-in-the-nation Office of Firearm Safety and Violence Prevention, and keeping guns out of dangerous hands.

This progress was substantial, but lawmakers fell short and did not pass a bill to restrict high capacity magazines. There is far more we can—and must—be doing to keep our communities safe from the terror of gun violence.

We worked tirelessly to elect Washington’s first true gun responsibility majority. Our communities expect leaders to do everything in their power to keep our communities safe. Instead, gun lobby bully tactics effectively buried legislation to protect our families by restricting high-capacity magazines. We know this bill would have saved lives.

Year after year, Washingtonians demand action to fight the gun violence epidemic, and again and again our elected officials let us down. We want to make one thing known: we will not be running another ballot initiative to do our legislators’ job for them.

Between now and November, we are going to be doing everything we can to celebrate the victories and make sure voters know exactly which politicians failed to prioritize community safety. But we can’t do that without your support. Can you give $15 to fund this fight?

If we don’t force our legislators to act, more lives will be lost to senseless gun violence. We can’t afford to wait.
