House Republicans break November fundraising record

The Hill | Julia Mueller

December 12, 2023

The House Republican campaign arm announced Tuesday that it has broken its
fundraising record for an off-year November.

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) brought in a $9
million haul last month, exceeding the 2021 off-year November record of
$7.2 million.

"House Republicans stepped up to the plate and helped the Committee hit a
fundraising grand slam - led by Speaker Johnson and our incredible
leadership team," NRCC Chairman Richard Hudson said in a release.

"With partners like this and an incredible political environment, extreme
House Democrats should dread yet another cycle in the minority," he added.

The additional funds brings the NRCC's cash on hand up to $41.4 million
according to the release. [1]Read more

Republicans promise delegates will stay in

Wisconsin for GOP convention

The national party wants to demonstrate that it's

committed to the swing state

Politico | Shia Kapos

December 12, 2023

Republicans are setting up their 2024 convention so that delegates don't
have to set foot in the blue state of Illinois. Convention organizers say
all the state delegations will stay at hotels within Wisconsin's borders-
and they're nudging them to fly in and out of the Milwaukee airport - when
Republicans meet next year to nominate their presidential candidate.

Accomplishing this is no small feat. Milwaukee is a comparatively smaller
city than the nearby Chicago, and it's challenging to find enough hotel
rooms for the large-scale political event.

Most convention delegates will stay in Milwaukee, though some may find
themselves taking a train from Kenosha, 40 miles south of Milwaukee, or a
bus from Madison, 80 miles west - even if some far-flung Chicago suburbs
might make more sense for some travelers. But for Republicans, it's worth
it to demonstrate that they're committed to the crucial swing state of
Wisconsin. [2]Read more

Republican Vince Fong announces bid

for McCarthy seat in California

The Hill | Julia Mueller

December 11, 2023

California state Assemblyman Vince Fong, a Republican, on Monday announced
his bid for retiring Rep. Kevin McCarthy's (R-Calif.) House seat in the
Golden State.

"It is my strong belief that the Central Valley must continue to be
represented by proven, conservative leaders in Congress. In light of recent
developments and in an attempt to unite our community in this critical
moment in our nation's history, I have decided to run for Congress in
2024," Fong said in a statement.

Fong had reportedly announced days earlier that he would not run for
Congress. He said in his latest statement that he initially thought "the
best way" to serve his community after McCarthy announced his plans to
retire at the end of his term was to continue working in the State Assembly
but now he plans to run to succeed the former speaker. [3]Read more

RNC announces it won't hold future

2024 GOP primary debates

Axios | April Rubin

December 8, 2023

The Republican National Committee will not participate in further 2024 GOP
primary debates, the organization said Friday.

Why it matters: The RNC has held four debates with Republican primary
candidates, which have seen declining viewership, though GOP frontrunner
former President Trump has skipped them all.
* "It is now time for Republican primary voters to decide who will be our
next President," the RNC said in a statement weeks before the Iowa Caucuses
* The organization freed candidates "to use any forum or format to
communicate to voters as they see fit."

State of play: ABC News and CNN are both slated to host debates early next
year in early primary states including New Hampshire and Iowa. The RNC has
no affiliation with these the organization said. [5]Read more

CNN to host two GOP presidential

primary debates in 2024

CNN | CNN Staff

December 7, 2023

CNN will host two Republican presidential primary debates next month in
Iowa and New Hampshire - states that hold the first contests in the race
for the 2024 GOP nomination, the network announced Thursday.

The events will provide Republican voters an opportunity to hear the
governing philosophies of the leading candidates seeking to challenge the
likely Democratic presidential nominee, President Joe Biden, in November.

The first debate will take place on January 10 at Drake University in Des
Moines, Iowa, less than a week before Iowa caucusgoers weigh in on the
Republican presidential race. The second debate will be January 21 at St.
Anselm College in Goffstown, New Hampshire. [6]Read more

"He is hated": House Republicans secretly consider expelling Matt Gaetz
after booting George Santos

USA Today | Ken Tran

December 7, 2023

Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., continues to draw the ire of his Republican
colleagues in the House weeks after he led the ouster of Rep. Kevin
McCarthy, R-Calif., from the speakership, with some of his detractors
privately floating expelling him from Congress.

Several Republican House members, many of whom are still angry at Gaetz for
his antics that have impeded McCarthy and the majority of the conference
from passing legislation, have begun to discuss Gaetz's ongoing
investigation by the Hous Ethics Committee in the wake of the expulsion of
embattled former Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y.

Leading up to Santos' expulsion, multiple opponents of his removal publicly
voiced their concerns about expelling a member who had not yet been
convicted of a crime, which would overturn the precedent set by Congress in
modern times. [7]Read more
