Democracy Was on the Docket in 2023, and It Won ([link removed])

By Marc Elias

Here are some updates from today.
* The Kentucky Supreme Court upheld ([link removed]) the state's congressional and state House districts, concluding that while both maps are partisan gerrymanders, neither one violates the Kentucky Constitution.
+ In the 2022 midterm elections, held under these maps, Republicans swept 80 out of 100 seats in Kentucky’s state House and five out of six congressional seats.
* A lawsuit ([link removed]) arguing that Dodge City, Kansas' at-large system for commission elections violates the Voting Rights Act and U.S. Constitution will head to trial on Feb. 27.
* An Arizona court held a hearing in a lawsuit ([link removed]) filed by a right-wing legal group challenging the use of drop boxes in the state. The group alleges that drop boxes violate Arizona's election law and want them banned.
* The Oregon Supreme Court heard oral argument in a lawsuit ([link removed]) filed by GOP state senators challenging a rule barring lawmakers with 10 or more unexcused absences during the legislative session from running for reelection.

Here’s what’s coming up tomorrow.
* The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will hold oral argument over Mark Meadows’ appeal to remove his Georgia 2020 election subversion case ([link removed]) to federal court.
