Urgent Action: Urge Policymakers to Respect the Right to Request Asylum!

 Dear John,

Please take action today to support migrants and refugees. Right now, there is a risk that the Senate and White House will accept devastating changes to the U.S. asylum process and the biggest expansion of detention and ICE enforcement in years.

Some members of Congress are using current military package negotiations in exchange of draconian restrictions on asylum. These actions would eliminate or cut back on protections for people seeking refuge in the United States.

Their proposals would change the standards to the “credible fear” screening process, making it even more difficult to apply for asylum and would replicate some of the greatest harms of the Trump era. If these proposals are implemented, people will lose lifesaving access to protection in the United States.  The latest proposal reportedly floated by the White House includes:

  • The implementation of an Asylum ban that would create near-impossible barriers to applying for asylum
  • The expansion of rapid deportation proceedings would subject migrant and refugee communities throughout the country at risk of detention and deportation.
  • The weakening of humanitarian and other forms of parole for those seeking safety at our borders.
  • Creating a new expulsion policy allowing CBP to immediately expel people at the border, similar to the lethal Title 42 policy

We cannot allow opening the door to a future president to round up and deport recently-arrived undocumented immigrants anywhere in the United States – eliminating one of the most important safeguards against mass deportation.

We strongly condemn the latest funding negotiations of Biden's supplemental request and demand that the administration and Members of Congress stand with migrant communities and reject any anti-immigrant proposals.

Please send a message right now to say that asylum rights cannot be up for grabs!

A pivotal moment in the fight to protect asylum

We urge our members and allies to send Congress a message that asylum rights must be protected and to respect commitments under national and international law. Rather than creating hurdles to prevent people from pursuing their legal right to seek asylum, lawmakers should work on creating channels for safe, orderly, and regular migration.

Urge your senators to oppose the proposed changes and block one of the few channels for accessing protection.

Take action, write to your senators!

We hope we can count on your continued support and partnership!
