What’s happening: The Department of Energy’s (DOE) recent National Transmission Needs Study has exposed a critical problem: our power grid is long overdue for upgrades. Transmission line improvements have decreased in the last decade, yet our electricity demands have and will only continue to increase.

Why is this important: Our power grid is stuck in the last century, and guess who's paying for it? Yep, us. Exorbitant electric bills, regular power outages, and rickety infrastructure that cannot handle extreme weather events — why are we stuck with the bill of these inefficiencies? If our electrical system can’t even support our current needs, how can we expect it to take on an additional electricity load when we transition to clean energy and electrification?

What’s next? While switching to renewable energy sources remains a priority for the White House, more is needed to be done to facilitate that transition. To successfully start the green revolution, we first need a more robust strategy to modernize our power grid. This will enable more affordable, cleaner, and efficient energy, thereby future-proofing our power supply.

There’s power in our voice, so let’s use it to get the real power we need for the future!
