No Quick Wins in Building Trust
Event looked at rebuilding trust in science after Covid

There are no quick wins in building trust–that was one of the takeaways of a Hastings Center event last week with authors of the recent special report, “Time to Rebuild: Essays on Trust in Health Care and Science.” The panel of experts also discussed the role of science communications in building trust and the challenges raised by distrust of experts and skepticism regarding the notion of expertise. The panelists included Arthur Caplan of NYU Grossman, Deirdre Mylod of Press Ganey, Leah Rand of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Melissa Creary of the University of Michigan School of Public Health, Michelle Chau of NYU Langone Health, and Lauren Taylor, also of NYU Grossman and a Hastings senior advisor. Watch the event.

And see this four-part Interview Series on Trust in Health Care with the authors of the special report as they reflect on the role that trust plays in health care.

Should Chatbots Ask for Informed Consent?
They show promise, but raise several issues

Chatbots are efficient in obtaining informed consent from prospective research participants—completing the job in 5 days, compared with 16 days for in-person consent—and are highly accurate in conveying information. But these impressive findings are based on a small study of mainly white participants, writes Mark A. Rothstein in Ethics & Human Research. He explores ethical and regulatory questions, including what role institutional review boards should play in overseeing the use of chatbots. Read more. (Subscription required.)

Looking Forward and Outward in These Critical Times
Help advance our mission

Since 1969, The Hastings Center has been a leading voice in addressing emerging questions in bioethics, while inviting the broader public to help inform our work. Across these topics, new value conflicts and moral uncertainties continually arise with the emergence of novel technologies, increased focus on ethical issues related to population (in addition to individual) health, and political polarization confronting our society. Philanthropy supports about 45% of our efforts to respond to today’s most pressing ethical challenges confronting society. As we consider how we should illuminate and help address these challenges, will you help advance our mission with a gift this year?
